With Priscilla Presley and a horse, Passport show makes a splash ![]() While the charming John O'Hurley joked, cajoled and tried very hard to get the VIP crowd to part with its money during the auction segment of Macy's annual Passport AIDS fundraiser at Fort Mason Thursday night, Priscilla Presley (so tiny!) took some quiet time backstage, sipping green tea before she came on to introduce the runway portion of the show. Once known for her teased black hair and gobs of black eyeliner, Presley now sports the shiny, flat-ironed hair of a model and a sample-size figure. "I like to do my own shopping, I used to own a boutique, so I like to look around and see what's out there,'' she said. "I like to look a little girly, but not flirty-girly, you know? I don't follow trends, like layering. I live in L.A. We don't know how to layer!'' This was her Passport debut. Presley is a quiet presence, quite soft spoken and not at all coquettish, perhaps a bit self-protective after a lifetime of being in the fishbowl. Still, it was a shame she was hidden behind a podium at the far end of the runway during her speech. If the audience can barely see the celebrity guest, what's the point of having one? Why not give her a mike and let her stroll the catwalk in that pretty black silk Yves Saint Laurent ruffled wrap dress ? She was here to bring attention to her favorite charity, the Dream Foundation, which she became involved with after helping grant a dying man a trip to Graceland. "We are the only adult dream-granting agency working nationally,'' she told the audience. Backstage, she said, "It made sense to come here. I thought that the two charities are so closely meshed -- I've been working with them for four years -- I wanted to let people know what it was all about. And, I always love to come here. I knew your former mayor, Frank Jordan, and his wife. Every time I come here, I don't know why I only stay one night.'' Meanwhile, onstage, the auction part of the program was under way. The handsome Hurley (of "Seinfeld'' and "Dancing with the Stars'' fame), got $4,500 for an autographed Carlos Santana guitar and gift package, but maybe the good people with deep pockets feel stretched too thin lately with Katrina, Darfur and the coming election campaigns. The auction seemed a hard sell. No worries, though, the underwear segment was coming up, and that always energizes the room. Where do they find those men? In their skivvies by the 2xist brand, here's proof that some models are definitely not too skinny. As usual with this feel-good event -- now in its 24th year -- that's raised tens of millions for AIDS research, there were razzle-dazzle production numbers, particularly the Sean John segment that featured a rock 'n' roll fireball display as a backdrop for male models in pinstriped suits. Hot. Then a beautiful woman on a beautiful chestnut horse cantered down the catwalk, followed by models in a series of equestrian-inspired outfits by Anna Sui, Theory, Trina Turk and, of course, Ralph Lauren. There's always a dance segment, and the VJ Culture dance troupe rocked out in clothes by American Rag and Green Dog. Graduate fashion and textile design students from San Francisco's Academy of Art University showed some polished pieces, and there were career-girl fashions from DKNY, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Hugo Boss. But some of the prettiest fashions were a series of gorgeous gowns by Roberto Cavalli, Arthur Mendoca, Carmen Marc Valvo, Elie Saab, Douglas Hannant and others in the Mac Viva Glam segment. The flamboyant boys of Heatherette, who design a sparkly club hopping, margarita-on-the-terrace line of graphic, colorful T-shirts, jeans and dresses, brought pieces from their recent New York fashion week show to town. Co-designer Richie Rich grew up in San Jose. "Having our clothes in the San Francisco Macy's is a real thrill,'' he said. Paris Hilton opened their show in New York earlier this month, in a leopard dress (bring her here next time!), though she still has a lot to learn. "She's a good model, but she did hold up the show for, like, an hour, because she couldn't find her lip gloss,'' Rich said. Still, bring her here! And give her an alarm clock! By the time the young Italian opera tenor Vittorio Grigolo (a popular MP3.com A-lister) appeared singing under a rain of red rose petals, the crowd was getting restless and many left the room before the finale. Next year, San Francisco's Passport turns 25. It should be a major extravaganza. Paris Hilton, anyone? credit: San Francisco Chronicle
